Set the milestones: a gift at order three, a deeper discount at six, whatever earns the stay. OpenSubs counts every rebill and pays out on the next order through Shopify: discounts apply themselves, gifts are a one-click claim, and the next tier stays in view the whole way.
No points bank, no store credit, no codes: a reward is a line on a real orderA claimed gift ships once and never re-billsEvery discount dedupes against the live Shopify contract before it applies
Points programs die of arithmetic: customers won’t do the math, and the unspent balance sits on your books teaching your accountant the word “breakage.” Here a tier reads the way you’d say it: “after five recurring orders: a free gift and 10% off”; stack as many as you like, load several rewards into one tier, and the count climbs on its own with every rebill, per customer, automatically.
A code assumes there’s a checkout to paste it into, and a rebill never visits one, so percentage and dollar rewards simply apply themselves to the customer’s next order through Shopify. Gifts announce themselves the moment they’re earned (email, text, a Klaviyo event), and claiming one is a single click: pick the subscription it rides, and it’s on the next box.
A claimed gift rides the next order as a 100%-off line, ships, and removes itself: there’s nothing left to re-bill, by design. Discounts are re-checked and deduped against the live Shopify contract before they touch anything, a failed redemption rolls back with the reward intact, and a hard failure raises an ops alert instead of disappearing quietly.
Progress moves only when the billing engine generates a real recurring order (the first checkout doesn’t count, imported history doesn’t count, and there’s no backfill to script), while catch-up minting runs fairness the other way: add a tier late, and a loyal customer’s next order delivers everything they’d already earned. Save gifts in the cancel flow carry their own cooldown (60 days by default, yours to tune), so the cancel button never turns into a vending machine.
Run loyalty on faith and it quietly becomes a cost center, so the analytics tab keeps score: issued, claimed, claim rate, top gifts, the daily trend, tier by tier. Tiers are built with a Shopify product picker, the program flips on or off in a setting, progress can reset store-wide for a fresh generation, and every subscription record carries its reward history, where support can redeem on a customer’s behalf or take a gift back off the upcoming order.

A win-back buys your own customer back with the steepest discount in the store. A perk is a gift at your margin, landed while they’re still happy, and the same machinery serves one wherever it earns its keep: a milestone on the ladder, a targeted offer in the portal, a save at the cancel screen. When leaving means walking away from something already earned, staying stops needing a pitch.
